As humans, sometimes we unconsciously neglect the beauty that is just sitting right next to us. We did not see and aware of things that is near us. But we keep dreaming and whining to see the beauty that has been obviously told located in a place far away. That is exactly what has just happened to me.
I lived in Yogyakarta since I started my bachelor degree. It was in the year 2007. So technically it is already almost 10 years living in this beautiful city. During that time, I do like to explore little details of this beautiful city. The Tamansari, the Sultan's Palace, Baron Beach, Prambanan, Ramayana Ballet, and all the other details I have explored. But I have neglected one hidden beauty of Yogyakarta that I regret of not finding it a long time ago. It is the sunrise experience of Borobudur Temple.
With my BATM |
The idea of catching the sunrise actually came from my BATM (Boyfriend At The Moment). We head to Borobudur at around 03:30 AM. It was still dark. With almost no traffic at all, it only took us 20 minutes drive to Borobudur from Yogyakarta. When we reach the Borobudur area, there will be many locals trying to stop the car pretending as a security in the area. They do not use uniform, so please just ignore. These men stop each cars heading to the Borobudur area trying to offer the sunset experience at what they called "cheaper price". Please be careful by not accepting their offers (although they offer in a way cheaper price).

The reason for not accepting their offer is that because I have confirmed the Borobudur Management that the only entrance that we are allowed to enter before sunrise is from the Manohara Hotel and Resort. So there are no other possible entrance besides from the resort. You don't need to stay at the resort just to see the sunrise. We can only pay IDR.250.000 per person (for Indonesian Citizen) or IDR.380.000 per person (for International Tourists) in the receptionist desk of the hotel. The ticketing open a 04:00 AM. By paying the entrance ticket, you will get the entrance pass, morning snacks (including tea and coffee), and a souvenir to bring home (I got a batik printed scarf). Also, you will be given a Batik Sarong (to put around your waist as a cover), a flash light (to lead your way through), and a rain coat (just in case it rains) that we need to return after the trip.

After receiving all the utensils, we walked to the top of the Borobudur. It was quite a morning exercise. Especially for me and him who rarely exercise. Slowly but sure, we finally reached the top of the Borobudur. The highest point of the Borobudur is called Nirvana (heaven). It was very difficult to reach the Nirvana. But once you reached there, all of the efforts you have put on before becomes very worthy. Just like the philosophy of reaching heaven. Difficult, but well deserved.

Once reaching the Nirvana, you must find your spot to sit while waiting for the sun to rise. What's great about this experience is that only limited amount of people are allowed to enter during this time. It is not that crowded so our experience becomes more delightful.
